Sierra College Celebrates Holi Festival!

Happy Holi!

AAPI Team Members Preeti Tickoo and Dr. Jane Skaife turned the Cross-Cultural Center into a vibrant and colorful HOLI Festival!  HOLI, celebrated on the day after the full moon in March, is a major Hindu tradition celebrating the onset of spring, along with good harvests, and the fertility of the land, and symbolizes the triumph of good over evil.

The EAS (Empowering Asian/Asian American Students) at Sierra College hosted 225 people with delicious ethnic food and music on March 26.  But the best part of the annual celebration is people splashing colors of love and laughter by throwing brightly colored, environmentally-friendly powder and water over each other. Each powdered color carries a meaning.  Red symbolizes love and fertility; yellow is the color of turmeric used as a natural remedy; blue represents the Hindi God Krishna; and green is for new beginnings.

Preeti is an economics professor and Jane is a sociology professor at Sierra College who has brought a great deal of APIDA education, awareness, and celebration to the region.  The two women also moderated an on-line conversation with Academy Award Nominated Producer/Director/Writer, Rintu Thomas.  He is an Academy Award Nominee and Sundance Winner of the documentary film, “Writing with Fire.”  You can be sure to see AAPI Placer County partnering with Sierra College shortly.

May the colors of HOLI fill your life with joy, happiness, and prosperity!
